Travel Size Print

Over Spring Break, we took Kids #2 and #3 on a road trip to Palm Springs. We wanted all the kids to go, but we’re at that point in life where family vacations include whoever is available. “PS” has been on my travel bucket list for as long as I’ve been watching House Hunters. I swoon over the butterfly rooflines and mid-century modern vibe, and if I’m ever to have a meet-cute with an A-lister, PS is my chance.

Black Momba is a roadside hazard waiting to happen, so we borrowed my dad’s lux Odyssey for our trip. After an overnight in Sacramento (totally sketch) we arrived in PS on time and immediately started basking in the warm sun that eludes us much of the year in the Pacific North West.

The Airbnb was perfect. The pool was perfect. The wind was not so perfect, but it was warm, so I overlooked that. Did you know there are windy and non-windy sides to PS? Ya, me neither. Makes sense when a massive wind farm is what you see driving in.

I love the sun, but it doesn’t love me back. I have a sun allergy called PMLE (Polymorphous Light Eruption) and if I don’t wear this one particular sunscreen from Eucerin, by day two of warm weather vacations I start getting a rash of tiny red dots on my skin. It doesn’t hurt or itch, it just looks odd, and it takes about two weeks to go away. So, I make sure to slather on my special sunscreen anytime I’m in the sun.

But by day four I noticed my skin was really itchy. I didn’t have any red dots, so I wrote it off as my sun allergy finding a new way to annoy me. I carried on and tried to ignore it, but my skin started to feel a bit tacky too. Awesome.

And then it hit me. Maybe the new lotion I picked up for the trip was irritating my skin. I grabbed the travel-size bottle out of the shower and located my cheater readers to see if there was some obvious sign that I should stop using it.

Not really… until I focused on the teeny tiny almost translucent print at the bottom of the bottle.

Body wash??!! For four days I’ve been applying body wash as lotion??!! No wonder I’m itchy and sticky!

And if just my knowing wasn’t shaming enough, I had to explain to my worried husband that I didn’t have some sort of weird PS skin disease, but rather just really poor eyesight.

But, come on!

“Deep Moisture”

“Instantly Soft Skin & Lasting Nourishment”

These are lotion descriptions, not body wash descriptions!

Body wash should say something like, “foaming formula” or “deep cleansing!” Something to cue consumers that what’s inside the bottle is soap. And I have a feeling I’m not the only one who has made this mistake, because look at the new bottle design. Body Wash clearly indicated at the top now!

I still love you, Dove, and no hard feelings. But in the future, if you could just write “Lotion” or “Soap” right across the top of the cap, I’d love you even more. Especially for travel-size bottles.

Keep it Golden, Girl. Even if you do make soap bubbles when you jump into a pool.

Oh, and I never did have my meet-cute with Leo DiCaprio. Next time, PS.
